Can you brief us about your scope of work during this internship?
I have primarily been working on improving the one-line diagram equipment extraction algorithm/process.
What were your key roles & responsibilities, and how did you work towards achieving them?
My key roles involved finishing my tickets and improving accuracy/performance, and to work towards achieving it, I programmed in Python and JavaScript and coordinated with offshore as necessary.
Among your many tasks, what is the one that you liked working on the most?
I really enjoyed learning more about machine learning and working with natural language processing models to do text and image classification.
What was the biggest challenge you came across, and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I came across, which is not exclusive to just ANB, is working with a generally undocumented and uncommented codebase. To overcome it takes much time spent parsing and debugging the code just to understand it.
What new skillsets and/or knowledge did you gain during your time with ANB?
I gained communication skillsets as I had not needed to work in a team like this before.
What do you feel are the highlights of working at a smaller tech company?
I think the highlights are that working in the small office environment, having lunch with colleagues rather than working in a much larger office is more personable.
What are the key takeaways from your exposure to the energy efficiency industry?
I found it interesting how slow and inefficient the interconnection applications are and how significant our improvements to the process are in comparison.
How did you find our company culture and the support you received from your colleagues?
The company culture is fairly lax, support from colleagues has been great. I’m very excited knowing that others are excited to continue having me on the team as a full-time employee.
How easy/challenging was it to collaborate remotely with COVID-19 restrictions in place?
Most of the time, it went pretty well. The only issues with remote collaboration, in my opinion, are the occasional internet connection issues with offshore.
How much did the internship match your expectations?
I was not expecting the team that I am working on to be quite so small in terms of developers, but their workload is as expected for the most part.
How much do you feel your internship will help you in your career going forward?
Other than starting my career by transitioning full-time, it will be helpful going forward by providing me with the skillsets gained by working in a professional environment.
