The demand for energy is relatively higher around this time of the year in most parts of the United States, and organizations want to make sure there is no deterioration in their energy conservation efforts. Certain organizations have dedicated energy management programs, while the majority do not. It is observed that even the most sophisticated organizations struggle to set realistic goals to reduce energy consumption.

From a recent survey by Lucid and Urjanet, 73% of surveyed organizations expect their commitment to sustainability to remain the same throughout 2017, and 21% contemplate some increase in their commitment next year. Digging deeper, it is also noted that 46% of them will have their energy management budgets same as last year, while 29% have already taken steps to increase their budgets envisaging larger energy conservation. All these developments are noteworthy, as the intent is still focused even after President Donald Trump turned down the Paris Agreement.
The following simple methods can help organizations conserve energy.
Server and Data Center Optimization:
Data centers are one of the highest sources of energy consumption in any organization. Servers must be maintained at an ambient air supply lesser than 50oF all the time and CRAC units must be positioned in the right place for efficient air circulation. There needs to be an even supply of intake air for the servers, and a good provision for the exhaust of hot air. It is recommended not to place the inlet or front-side of a server stack facing the exhaust of the other. Positioning CRAC and servers according to the intake and exhaust of air can conserve a lot of energy in the long run.

HVAC System Adjustments:
The HVAC temperature settings can be flexible, unlike CRAC units, depending on the climatic conditions. Organizations can retrofit air conditioners for variable fan speeds, set up economizers to bring in the cooling air from outside. Consider a cooler evening or a winter, when air conditioning is the least required; organizations can save up to 60% annually if the HVAC systems are smartly managed based on the outside temperature.
Conservation of energy is easy if there are sensors placed to automatically to operate light and water. Manual operations may increase the chance of resource wastage. Though the setup costs may be slightly higher, the end result is increased energy efficiency.
